BIG CHEESE, LLC

BIG CHEESE is the home of projects related to MOUSE, the Monolithic Opinionated Unix System Environment: a statically linked and comprehensible Workstation OS you can understand in an afternoon and extend as far as you please.

MOUSE is entirely source-based, and borrows ideas and implementations from many projects that came before it:

• Coherent, versioned World releases, à la FreeBSD
• A statically linked World, à la Dérive
• A system you can understand in an afternoon, à la Dérive
• A strict separation between World (what we give you) and Ports (the filth you install), à la FreeBSD, NetBSD, et al
• An iron-fist filesystem hierarchy, strictly splitting what goes where and why
• A declarative /etc/rc.conf-based service policy, backed by OpenRC

MOUSE derives its core, including kernel, libc, and certain parts of its userland from NetBSD, and other components from wherever it damn pleases. It's also probably worse than every project aforementioned at what it borrows. Fortunately, none of them are trying to build MOUSE.

Current release list:

• MOUSE v0.1 - The devil came down to userland.
• MOUSE v0.2 - You WILL have a desktop and you WILL like it.
• MOUSE v0.3 - All shims forgiven! Start a new life in the new old World!
• MOUSE v0.4 - Make World, not war!

All releases v0.2 and earlier are Linux-based, v0.3 onwards is NetBSD-based.
